No budget for training.
These times are somehow gone.
Nowadays, we expect the poor guys and girls from internal IT to just get it?
“You guys kept the whole AD and FileServices running for decades, shouldn`t be a problem with this new thing called AzureAD (sorry entra ID now) and stuff…”
Windows 2000 courses with 3 books printed out in ringfolders
Travelling 5 days to become eligible for certification in VMWare VCP
Everyone had the same machine, either via Acronis or Ghost images. So everyone had the same adminaccount & password so we could do...
NET SEND
REMOTE REGEDIT
VB-Scripts
Startup Scripts
Setting funny background images
Are we crazy to just expect that? The famous James Dean movie title in german means translated back to english, they don`t know what they are doing….
Problems: the whole new lingo, abbreviations and just generally overwhelming.
In regards to the internal it now and not knowing: how should they know? Do we really expect everything should just keep on trucking fine after we finish a cloud migration as an IT Service provider? We talk about stuff like Privileged Identity Management, FIDO2, Conditional Access, Defenders in every form, variation and colour available to the universe, Compliance, Information Protection and potentially labeling – can be quite overwhelming i guess all that lingo and abbreviations. Microsofts marketing departments doesn`t help either with renaming stuff on a regular basis.
Solution: sell training with projects.
Yeah ok, but what could we do, and how can we help as service providers ?
Easy! Just sell training with your project and products, si it`s in somebodys budget.
And for the benefit of everybody, do the training BEFORE you start a cloud journey.
Budgets are so tight and employee training seems to be cut first, that this for me seems the only way to get some much needed help to the people that keep everything running.
And if you do the training right, they should, with some additional studytime and maybe some Microsoft CDX demo tenants from you, and absolutelly cancelling that damn Netflix subscription also be able to maybe do a Microsoft Certification for their career after everything is up and running
Everybody, do the MD-102 certification and understand what`s in it:
We call it bootcamp - infamous in the 90s to be done in a remote location - in dubai within 5 days, hotelstay, studying until your head explodes and certification on the last day to become MCSE2000. And no, i never did one of these, got my street creds the old school way
SwissITP: 5 day bootcamps to the rescue
With my employeer SwissITP it is also 5 days, but over 2 month in a small class of max. 3 people!
Everybody gets their own tenant, licenses, domainname – from A to Z building up everything from scratch and therefore learning by doing. And no, I expect nobody to be perfect after these 5 days – BUT i guarantee, nobody will just disable productive Conditional Access policies, allow unmanaged devices to run Apps and hold company data, or forget to exclude the break glass account when creating a new one either…
